Find cheapest gas price
Bitter gas consumers turn to Web site for price break
Gas consumers have found a voice at a new Web site. GasPriceWatch.com helps customers find the cheapest gas prices in their areas by asking them to report on local rates. The result: Thousands of Americans are patrolling their neighborhoods, helping each other beat high prices-and contributing to the site's unexpected success.
The site was launched in March, 2000, at a time of relatively low gas prices. But by midsummer, when the rage over rising prices was reaching fever pitch, GasPriceWatch.com was getting hundreds of thousands of visitors.
"The number of people who visit the site at any given time has been directly proportional to the price of gasoline, said Bradley Proctor, one of the site's four founders.
The Ohio company has only nine employees and depends largely on its customers for information. There are about 7,700 registered "spotters," and they report from all 50 states by emailing or calling in prices at their local gas stations.
