Silex Innovations Inc., Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, has developed two new lines of high performance engine silencers for diesel and natural gas engines. The Super Hospital Plus and Power Puck silencers are designed to achieve maximum attenuation as well as minimize radiated breakout noise and are targeted toward the power generation and gas compression markets. They will be officially unveiled at the Power Gen International show in Orlando in December.

In development for nearly two years, both new silencer families provide what the company called a "dramatic improvement" in sound attenuation performance by combining reactive and absorptive technologies. Further noise reduction is attained by the use of an insulated shell design.

The combination of technologies improves the insertion loss at both the low and high frequencies, thereby improving the overall acoustic performance, the company said.

The Super Hospital Plus silencer, also designated the JE silencer, is an expansion of the J series of cylindrical silencer units designed for installations where height restraints are not a factor. Inlet dimensions range from approximately 1.5 in. to 30 in., with custom sizes available to fit any diesel or natural gas engine on the market, Silex said. Insertion losses for the new units are between 40 and 55 dB(A), according to Silex.

The PK series Power Puck silencers are designed specifically for enclosure and marine applications where height dimensions are critical. They are available in critical, super critical, hospital and super hospital plus grades, in both insulated and uninsulated versions as well as single and dual inlet configurations. The Power Puck silencers are available with inlets from 4 in. to 20 in.

An added feature of both the JE and the "Ice" series Power Puck silencers is improved thermal control, which the company said lessens the need for thermal insulation blankets in enclosed applications. This is accomplished primarily by the internal design of the units, which reduces heat buildup, according to Silex.

Both of the new silencer lines are available with carbon, aluminized, stainless and Corten steel construction, allowing them to be engineered for the specific environmental conditions of the application.

Silex used ANSYS and CFD Analysis in the development of these products to tune both the acoustical performance as well as minimize back pressure constants on the engine. Both silencers are included in the Silex Web-based Sizing Program.

The sizing program, Silex Digital Engineer, is designed to more quickly and precisely develop silencing solutions for diesel and gaseous fueled engines. It was designed to be extremely intuitive and enables a user to design and price a complete exhaust system within minutes, the company said.

Both of the new silencer families are designed and engineered at Silex Innovations' Mississauga facilities.
