Arizona gas prices jump due to faulty pipeline
PHOENIX (AP) -- A temporary shutdown of the pipeline that supplies about a third of the gasoline in Phoenix and Tucson is raising prices and creating shortages at some service stations.
"Most suppliers are out of gas right now," said Wayne Rogge, manager of operations for Union Distribution, a gas wholesaler.
Dan Cummings, a spokesman for Los Angeles-based ARCO, said many of the company's 77 service stations in the Phoenix area are experiencing supply problems and most have recently raised prices to curb demand.
The problem began Friday when concerns about defective piping caused the underground pipeline to be shut down. The line carries about 450 million gallons of gasoline from El Paso, Texas, to Tucson and Phoenix.
