District 5 sponsored an essay contest for grades K-6. The theme of the contest was "A Nurse is Important Because." We had approximately 25 entries. The contest was held in conjunction with the "Hooked on Health" pediatric health fair sponsored by the Paducah Community College Nursing Program. Approximately 350 children attended the fair which had interactive displays by both PCC nursing students as well as Murray State students. The winner was Madison Ellegood, a 2nd grader from Lowes Elementary. The prize was a $50 gift certificate from Kentucky Oaks Mall.

Dear Nursis,
You can help doctors, give shots, paper work, check heart, take blood, take temperature and you can help the people get well. And did you ever feel woozy? I wood help the people get up and I will get them ice cream to. I will get flowers for them to. I will give them anything they want. Do you feel pain. Do you feel really, really, sick? Do you feel a dady. Do you feel bad. Do you feel better. Want hurts. Want happened. What is a matter. Want feels wrong. Want can we do. How can we help you.

Nurses are people who work at the hospital. A nurse has a very Important job. She takes care of people. There are more than two million nurses who can be boys and girls. Now there are more boys who are nurses than there use to be.
Nurses work at the doctor's office. The doctor's office is where you go when you're sick. Nurses try to make you better. At the doctor's office, they check your ears, nose, height, weight, throat, and tonsils. The doctor's check your body to make your body strong.
Nurses also work at the hospital. It is a good place to go when you're sick. At the hospital, nurses help you and they help the doctor's as well. For example, if someone comes to the hospital who was in a car wreck, the nurses investigate the problems they have and tell the doctor. Nurses stay busy all the time.
Now that you know all about the nurses, you won't be scared to go to the doctor. Nurses have big hearts and care for people. Nurses are very nice and polite people. Nurses are important because they help people in the community. Where would we be without them?
