BRENTWOOD, Tenn. & SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 2003
Comdata Corp.(R), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ceridian Corp. (NYSE: CEN), announced today that its Stored Value Systems (SVS) subsidiary and minority-owned marketing partner, Salt Lake City-based Gift Card Solutions(R) (GCS) have jointly introduced an electronic cash card program for Warren, Mich.-based Big Boy Restaurants International L.L.C. The restaurant chain, known best for its legendary Big Boy character at each of its locations and the hamburger that shares its name, is offering the card online and in its locations as replacements to its paper gift certificates.
"We hope the new Big Boy gift card enjoys the same sense of timeless nostalgia as Big Boy himself," said John Bechard, president of GCS. "We're excited to support both Big Boy company- and franchise-owned Big Boy stores with the modern conveniences of electronic cash card services."
Big Boy is one of many casual and quick-service restaurants that have adopted the electronic cash card in its stores as technology has evolved to incorporate streamlined accounting and inventory systems to create a turnkey program for franchise- and company-owned locations. SVS and GCS deploys an exclusive Franchise Friendly(R) accounting system that allows store owners of both segments to accurately settle gift card transactions with corporate offices, regardless of where a card was purchased and eventually redeemed.
Big Boy gift cards can be purchased from $10 up to $500 inside its stores or online, at www.bigboy.com. The cards are fully rechargeable.
"Big Boy is in the midst of an aggressive expansion, and we felt that we would benefit from offering our new and repeat customers with a new and adaptable replacement to our gift certificates," said Bill Hadden of Big Boy. "Our customers love convenience and this is one way we can enhance their visit to our stores."
Big Boy was born in Glendale, Calif., when founder Bob Wian listened to customers when they asked him to create something different than a plain hamburger. Bob cut a hamburger bun into three slices and inserted two hamburger patties between them. He named his creation the Big Boy after a chubby six-year-old restaurant patron, the inspiration for the animated character that appears outside Big Boy restaurants.
As part of the agreement with Big Boy, Stored Value Systems and Gift Card Solutions will manage card production and packaging and provide Internet-based back office reporting that will allow Big Boy to track card redemption rates, perform card activation and analyze purchasing trends not previously available with its paper-based gift certificate program.
Stored Value Systems recently expanded the unique loyalty- and brand-building properties of its cash card offering, having acquired a minority stake in Salt Lake City-based Gift Card Solutions (formerly Gift Check Solutions) in 2002. GCS is considered the leading cash card provider in the restaurant industry.
