PSA Goes to CANADA - details for travelers heading to Canada - Brief Article
The Delta Meadowvale Resort, 6750 Mississauga Road, Mississauga, Ontario, extends a warm welcome to PSA, and is excited to host PSA's 61st Annual International Conference of Photography, August 30 through September 4, 1999.
As Chairman of the International Conference Committee, I also welcome you and strongly encourage you to attend our conference. In addition to the great tours, inspiring programs and creative workshops we have lined up for you, you'll experience history, culture, aesthetics, favorable climate, delightful company and the most economical rates we've had in years.
Right now, economic conditions favor American travelers in Canada. The stronger dollar makes everything we buy in Canada a bargain. The only downside is U.S. citizens are allowed to take home only $400 retail value in merchandise duty free. Handmade crafts are exempt, as well as merchandise made in the U.S. but sold in Canada. However, gifts may be mailed to friends and family in the U.S. both duty free and tax free provided the retail value of the gift does not exceed $100. Local postal stations are open 8:00 AM until 5:30 PM weekdays.
When preparing for your trip you should be aware of some general requirements. Here are some helpful suggestions: Canadians have an unshakable determination to protect their natural environment and to keep their communities clean and sate. In respect for the Canadians and for our own personal enjoyment of this charming, fascinating country--cooperate.
Passports and visas are the responsibility of each attendee. To expedite border crossing you'll need a valid passport or an original birth certificate and photo identification. Also accepted is a copy of your birth certificate with a raised seal and a photo ID. Permanent residents (who are not citizens) need their alien-registration card. Attendees from other countries must have a valid passport and a visa.
If driving (in addition to the above) you'll need proof of insurance and proof of vehicle ownership. Seat belts are required for all occupants and possession of radar detectors is illegal. Canada is equipped for travelers with disabilities, if you have a permit entitling you to use special access parking in your home state, you may also use it in Canada. Canada uses the metric system of weight and measurements. It's approximately 18km or 11 miles from the airport to the Delta Meadowvale Resort. You don't need a conversion chart. Just remember to multiply kms by 0.6 (50 x 0.6 = 30 etc), i.e. 50km = 30 miles and 1000 km = 60 miles.
Gasoline is sold by the litre: 3.78 litres of gasoline is 1 gallon in the U.S. 4.5 litres = 1 Canadian (Imperial) gallon.
Computers and cameras are considered personal baggage if brought in for your personal use. In some cases it would be a good idea to register your cameras with U.S. customs. I've never experienced a problem with my SLR or three lenses, and am unaware of any restrictions on a film amount.
Alcohol, tobacco and drugs are restricted; however, you may have few or no problems bringing legal drugs into Canada for your own personal use. Prescription drugs should be clearly identified and should be carried in the original packaging with a label that specifies they are being used under prescription. It's a good idea to bring a copy of your prescription and a contact number for your doctor. Diabetics and others who have to bring syringes with them should also carry some evidence of their need for using these devices. It would also be a good idea to check with your insurance company and, if necessary, get traveler's health insurance before leaving the U.S. in case you find yourself ill or injured. Canada hospitals are publicly managed by provincial and hospital authorities.
My recommendation is to convert some of your money into Canadian dollars before leaving home. Credit cards are the most practical since the currency exchange will be done automatically. Major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted in Canada. We're all seasoned travelers and already know to be armed with loose currency for baggage tips etc. To get the best rates, you should exchange your money at a financial institution i.e. bank, trust company, or currency exchange rather than a store or other commercial establishment.
September in Toronto holds an average daily temperature of 21 [degrees] Celsius maximum (70 [degrees] Fahrenheit) and a 12 [degrees] Celsius minimum (54 [degrees] Fahrenheit). Conversion formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit is (F: C x 9/5 + 32). 15 degrees C is about 60 degrees F.
GST (goods and services tax) is a federal sales tax for Canadian residents. Conference attendees are entitled to a rebate, provided they save their receipts and apply. Tax refund applications for visitors can be picked up at any Canada Customs office. Most area gift shops, department stores, hotels, and tourism information centers also distribute this application form.
We're looking forward to seeing you and enjoying this conference with you.
