Belk bucks dept. store trend with new market
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- While many regional department stores are consolidating their store bases, at least one has finite expansion plans. Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk Inc. recently announced that it will enter the Missouri market in spring 2006. Pending finalization of lease negotiations, the retailer will open a new 66,000-square-foot unit at Branson Landing in Branson, Mo. The company also has 14 store openings planned for 2004, in addition to four remodels--healthy growth for a mature retailer whose founding dates back to 1888.
"Belk has an outstanding reputation for providing customers with the best in fashion, value, quality and prompt friendly service, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in Branson," said Linda Zwern, chairman of Belk's Greenville, S.C.-based Western division.
This East Coast retailer operates approximately 225 stores, in 14 states, predominantly in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. During its most recent fiscal year, ended Jan. 31 2004, the privately owned company brought in $2.26 billion in revenues.
Belk is designing its new store to meet the specific needs of regional consumers. Zwern stated that these will be reflected in terms of merchandise assortment, layout and store design.
Belk carries leading national fashion apparel, footwear, cosmetics and home brands. Assortments generally include prestige names, such as Estee Lauder, Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. Additionally, the company retails exclusive private labels.
Without giving specifics, Zwern noted that decor will reflect the tastes of the Missouri market. Every department will be decorated uniquely, while a variety of fixtures will tie into the particular merchandise that they display.
Belk will maintain its standard department-store features, particularly an emphasis on customer service. A gift registry and gift-wrapping will be available. Apparel alterations--typically a higher-end service will also be offered.
The retailer's luxe atmosphere appealed to Branson Landing's developers, who are targeting young, affluent shoppers, as well as its management firm, Urban Retail Properties Co.
"The merchandising strategy at Branson Landing is to offer a unique shopping and dining experience in a beautiful, waterfront setting and Belk is a perfect fit," said Urban's ceo Ross B. Glickman.
