Feds probe abuse of Pell Grant program - General Accounting Office investigates abuse of college financial aid program through false registration of students
The most popular federal financial aid program, Pell Grant, is being abused by institutions who register non-existent students or destitute immigrants who enroll in classes just to receive stipends, according to recent investigations by the General Accounting Office.
Hearings have begun in Washington, D.C., on the program, which doled out $6.3 billion to 4.1 million students last year.
