Black College Queens 2003
LOOK at them. From the crowns of their heads to the tips of their feet, they are trendsetters and leaders of tomorrow. They are the Black Queens of 2003, and they have shown that with beauty comes grace, style, intelligence, and a desire to make life better for all.
Beginning with the middle of the alphabet, the 2003 list includes queens from historically Black colleges and universities, and Black queens from traditionally White institutions of higher education.
Cancer researchers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, entertainers and caretakers--they are the future.
Miss Harris-Stowe State College is ClauDean Chinaka Kizart, an elementary education/ special education major from Chicago. She appears to earn a Ph.D. in education, and enjoys African dance and sewing.
Tiffany Chari Gainer, a junior from Buffalo, N.Y., is Miss Howard University. A political science major, she plans to pursue a career in corporate law, and enjoys reading Black-authored novels.
Miss Morehouse College is Jennifer S. Hembrick, a senior at Spelman College and a native of Richmond, Va. A senior majoring in psychology/pre-medicine, she plans to open an urban family clinic that serves low-income families.
Lauren M. Scott of Cincinnati is Miss Johnson C. Smith University. The senior business administration major intends to earn her master's degree in business administration and is a member of the tennis team.
Darcie A. Chism, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., is Miss Fisk University. She is a psychology/education major who plans to become a principal in her hometown.
Miss Meharry Medical College is Keisha Natasha Blair, of the Bronx, N.Y. She is a third-year medical student who plans to become a pediatrician for the U.S. Navy.
Miss Morris Brown College is Bonnecia Williams, a senior from St. Louis. The music education major is a member of the Student Senate and honor society.
Miss North Carolina Central University is a senior, Candis N. Jones. The Fayetteville, N.C., native is in the honor society and plans to become a teacher and counselor.
Miss Philander Smith College, a senior from El Dorado, Ark., is Taco Williams. A biology/pre-medicine major, she plans to become an oncologist.
Lafay C. Warwick is Miss Miles College. The senior from Talladega, Ala., is a business/marketing major seeking a master's degree in business administration.
Antoinette M. Heyward is Miss Morris College. A native of Ridgeland, S.C., she is a senior majoring in business administration and wants to become a loan officer.
Porsche Vanderhorst is Miss Oakwood College. A native of North Bethesda, Md., she is a junior majoring in English, language arts education and vocal performance.
Nella P. Mupier is Miss Prairie View A&M University. The Bloomington, Ill., native is a senior majoring in psychology. The HIV/AIDS activist hopes to get a Ph.D. in psychology.
Nikeya D. Carter, a senior biology major, is Miss Mississippi Valley State University. A native of Huntsville, Ala., she plans to become a physical therapist and personal trainer.
Miss Norfolk State University is Stephanie N. Lassiter, a sophomore political science major. The Chesapeake, Va., native is a Thurgood Marshall Scholar and an aspiring attorney.
Miss Paine College, Jamey A. Frails, is a junior from Harlem, Ga. An English major who's involved in student government, she plans to become a college professor.
Miss Rust College, LaTonya M. Turner, is a senior from Tchula, Miss. The biology/pre-medicine major and honor society member wants to become a cardiovascular surgeon.
Miss Morgan State University, Nia M. Wilkes, is a senior from Yonkers, N.Y., majoring in elementary education. The aspiring teacher writes poetry and dances for leisure.
Brooke Myatt, a senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., is Miss North Carolina A&T State University. The graphics communications major plans a career in advertising.
Ebony Cuyler of Orange, Texas, is MIss Paul Quinn College. The senior accounting major, who enjoys sports and music, wants to become an accountant.
Charis Walker is Miss Saint Augustine's College. The Pittsburgh native is a senior math education major. The student government member plans to attend graduate school.
Miss Savannah State University, Jennifer Desiree Shealey, is a senior from College Park, Ga. The business management major intends to work in public relations.
Miss Southern University and A&M College is Erica M. Walton. A native of Belzoni, Miss., she is a senior mathematics major who volunteers and tutors in her spare time.
Kristen Maria Aiken, a junior from Columbia, S.C., is Miss Spelman College. A Spanish and international studies major, she hopes to attend law school.
Kristin Joy Joseph is Miss Texas College. The Beaumont, Texas, native is a senior majoring in biology. She plans to attend pharmacy school.
Kimberly Nixon, a senior chemistry major, is Miss Shaw University. The Portsmouth, Va., native is a member of the honor society and plans to attend medical school.
Miss Southern University at New Orleans is Shantrell Bishop of New Orleans. The senior is a criminal justice major who plans to become a contract lawyer.
Miss Stillman College is Angela T. Myrick of Montgomery, Ala. The senior is a business marketing major who plans a career in pharmaceutical sales.
Miss Texas Southern University, Joie D. Rasberry, is a senior from Houston. A speech communication major, she aspires to operate her own public speaker's bureau.
Miss Sojourner-Douglass College, Peggy A. Anderson, is a junior from Towson, Md. An administration and management major, she is pursuing a career in business.
Marci Simone Siglar, a sophomore secondary education major, is Miss Southern University at Shreveport. The Shreveport, La., native hopes to become a math teacher.
Recennah D. Braxton of Fort Deposit, Ala., is Miss Talladega College. A senior chemistry major, she spends her free time playing piano and volunteering.
QuShawanda K. Fields, Miss Tougaloo College, is a senior from Flint, Mich. A health and recreation major, she intends to pursue a doctorate in pediatric physical therapy.
Kourtney J. Fulton, Miss South Carolina State University, is a senior from Columbia, S.C. The professional mathematics and math education major plans to become a professor.
Miss Southwestern Christian College is Charmaine Richardson, a junior from Terrell, Texas. The religious education major seeks a master's in marriage and family therapy.
Miss Tennessee State University, Rashida Amina Bint Mingo is a senior from Somerville, Tenn. The English literature major intends to study theology.
Miss Tuskegee University is Margaret T. Gunn. The Tuskegee, Ala., native is an English Language Arts Education major who plans to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Jasmine Jones is Miss University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. A native of Kankakee, Ill., she is a senior with a double major in criminal justice and psychology.
Miss Virginia State University is Tracey Gaddy, a senior from Charlotte, N.C. An English/mass communications major, she intends to attend law school.
Miss Wilberforce University is Katrese Kirk, a junior from Burlington, Iowa. The mass media communication major, who does dramatic interpretation, plans to become a journalist.
Miss Alabama State University is Ronica P. Reid, a senior from Charlotte, N.C. An award-winning mass communications major, she hopes to become a national TV anchor.
Miss University of the District of Columbia is Royan Miller. A native of Washington, D.C., the senior theater arts major wants to act and get advanced degrees in medicine.
Carleitta La'Sharn Paige, Miss Virginia Union University, is a senior from Washington, D.C. The biology major plans to pursue a doctorate in molecular biology.
Rolanda Janelle Lee Patrick is Miss Winston-Salem State University. The senior majors in molecular biology and wants to obtain a master's degree in medical science.
Courtney Lachelle Daniels, a senior accounting major, is Miss Albany State University. She hopes to become an accountant and a company's chief financial officer.
Krystin Richardson, a native of Capitol Heights, Md., is Miss University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The senior English major plans to attend law school.
